Do you know why the houses on the greek Islands are painted in White and Blue? The white color is purely practical as white reflects the harsh sunlight. Painting the houses in white actually helps to keep them cool. However the main reason why many people used blue was a blue-tinted cleaning agent called “loulaki”. It’s used for washing clothes, thus a product that was cheap and easily found, using the tablets with the limestone plaster would dye the solution blue. But it wasn’t until 1967 that other colors disappeared as the military government believed that using only blue and white showed unification and mandated all buildings to be repainted blue and white which then made this a trademark of the islands. Starting from 1974 the government made it a law, a decision which was motivated by a jump in tourism to the islands.⁣
